Labor Advocate Training: March 1, 2024

This all-day training (9AM - 445PM) is intended for labor advocates to learn from NAA arbitrators about how to present grievance arbitration cases, and includes a brief overview of the key issues and techniques, followed by students engaging in the hands-on preparation and presentation of a labor case study, with NAA arbitrators assisting students'  preparation of the case and then conducting mock arbitration hearings.  


Friday, March 1

8:30 a.m. Registration (Note: coffee and light breakfast available in hotel lobby)

9:00 a.m. Welcome and Orientation

9:15 a.m.  Overview of Labor Grievance Arbitration Process

10:30 a.m. Advocates Prepare Their Cases.  In concurrent Breakout Sessions and with the assistance of an NAA Arbitrator faculty member, teams prepare their cases for presentation during the afternoon.

12:30 p.m. Lunch

1:15 p.m.  Advocates Present Their Cases.  In concurrent Breakout Sessions, teams present their cases to a different NAA Arbitrator faculty member for decision.

3:30 p.m. Labor Arbitrator Panel: Ask Me Anything.  A panel of NAA arbitrators answer your questions about what works and doesn't in labor arbitration.

4:30 p.m. Closing Remarks

4:45p.m. Adjourn 

5:00 p.m. Reception  Please join us for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

This all-day conference (9AM - 3PM) is intended for NAA Southeast Region members, other labor arbitrators, and labor advocates interested in learning more about, or continuing their education in, the field of labor arbitration; it is also a chance to network or reconnect with fellow labor practitioners.

Saturday, March 2

9:00 a.m. Welcome and Orientation

9:15 a.m.  NAA President's Address

10:00 a.m.  Appointing Agency Reports.  Hear updates from FMCS, AAA Labor, and NMB.

10:45 a.m. Federal Sector Arbitration - Federal Labor Agency Overview.  Hear the latest about labor arbitration from a panel of representatives of FLRA, FSIP, and FMCS.

12:15 p.m. Lunch - Speaker from NLRB Region 12 Office

1:15 p.m.  Pick one of 2 Concurrent Sessions:

  • State/Local Government Arbitration Hot Topics

              OR

  • Federal Sector Arbitration from Advocate’s Perspective: What do you want your arbitrators to know? 

2:45 p.m. Closing Remarks

3:00 p.m. Adjourn Conference

3:05 - 3:30 p.m.  Annual Regional Business Meeting (open only to NAA Members)

Where:

The Training and Conference will take place at the Hyatt Place Tampa Airport/Westshore, 5308 Avion Park Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Cost:

Pricing for the event is as follows

  • Labor Advocate Training (March 1 only): $250 if registered by December 1, 2023; $300 thereafter 
  • Regional Conference (March 2 only): $300 if registered by December 1, 2023; $350 thereafter 
  • Advocates wishing to attend both the Training and the Conference (March 1 and 2):  $500 if registered by December 1, 2023; $600 thereafter


Registration fee includes admission and lunch on the selected event day(s), as well as the Friday evening reception (regardless of which event day(s) you purchase).
